Sustainable trash bags for organic waste
- An alternative to PLA bags that complies with the BioAbfV
- Fully recyclable
- Industrially and garden-compostable
- Supports a sustainable circular economy
- Robust and efficient – for maximum durability and cost-effectiveness
- Manufacturing in Europe for shorter delivery times
The patented Zell-Gras trash bags are a particularly sustainable alternative to conventional trash bags because they are plastic-free* and can therefore be fully recycled. They are recyclable and can be returned to the compost or used for bioenergy. One trash bag, when used for a longer period, replaces up to three standard bags, thereby saving additional materials and costs. Furthermore, the bags are economically attractive because, unlike “pure” paper bags, they do not get soaked through as quickly. The bags come in three standard sizes and can be used in households, the food service industry, cafeterias, airplanes, or ships. Since the bags are manufactured in Europe,CO₂ emissions from transportation are also reduced due to the short delivery distances.
Double the Cellulose Power
Our Zell-Gras trash bags are made of two layers of cellulose: grass paper and Zell-Glas, meaning they are made from 100% natural raw materials. Cellulose is a natural, fibrous substance found in the cell walls of plants; it is biodegradable, durable, and odorless and tasteless.
We combine the properties of cellophane and grass paper to create optimal, sustainable bags that are approved for the organic waste bin. Thanks to the cellophane layer on the inside, these bags are moisture-resistant and grease-proof. Cellophane is a transparent paper film that is also used in many other food-related applications and can be purchased separately from us.
Grass paper is a sustainable alternative to conventional paper, made partly or entirely from grass fibers—more specifically, from dried hay—and forms the outer layer of our eco-friendly trash bags. This not only gives them a sustainable beige paper-like appearance with visible dots of grass fibers, but also makes them breathable, which helps prevent odors and mold growth.
Mandatory Organic Waste Collection in 2025: Our trash bags are the solution
New rules under the Organic Waste Ordinance (BioAbfV) have been in effect since May 2025, aimed at improving the quality of organic waste. The plastic content may not exceed 1%, and the total content of foreign materials may not exceed 3%. Waste management companies must inspect organic waste upon receipt and take action if these limits are exceeded. Packaged organic waste must be unpacked before processing—bioplastics also count as contaminants. There are no direct penalties for households, but municipalities can take action in cases of non-compliance, such as by refusing to collect the waste or imposing higher fees.
It is recommended that you put only compostable kitchen and yard waste in the compost bin. Plastic, coated cardboard, or coffee capsules do not belong in it. This makes our patented trash bags the perfect solution, as they are plastic-free*, compostable, and meet the new requirements for organic waste.
* Plastic-free as defined by the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUP Directive). The product contains no plastics as defined in Directive (EU) 2019/904.
